The architectural design of Laucala Island is deeply rooted in its geographical context, drawing inspiration from the natural environment itself. Utilizing elements such as natural woods and organic textures, the interiors seamlessly merge with the surrounding landscape. Traditional Fijian materials and construction techniques, including the use of ‘magimagi’ (coconut husk string) to bind timber structures and ‘balabala’ (fern tree stems) to mark entrances, are prominently featured throughout the property. Indigenous craftsmanship is showcased in handcrafted artworks and accents, exemplified by the stunning jellyfish chandeliers adorning villa bedrooms. Crafted from hanging shell disks, these chandeliers evoke a sense of movement, as if gracefully swimming beneath the palm-thatched ceilings, adding to the island’s unique aesthetic experience. This portfolio work was done by Peter Rankin whilst at Architects Pacific Design Partnership.

      Savusavu Market

Under Construction, the Savusavu Market is a dynamic addition to the local landscape, designed as a two-storey building to cater to diverse community needs. The ground level of this bustling structure will host a vibrant array of amenities including market vendors offering fresh produce and local wares, cozy coffee shops inviting patrons to linger, an accessible information booth, a bustling handicraft center showcasing local artistry, and convenient kiosks for quick snacks and essentials. Meanwhile, Level 1 will accommodate SME vendors eager to showcase their products, alongside additional kiosks and conference rooms ideal for community gatherings and business meetings. The design prioritizes accessibility with public conveniences and disability-compliant facilities, ensuring inclusivity for all visitors. An elevator provides seamless access to the first floor, reinforcing the market’s commitment to accessibility and convenience in this evolving community hub.
